Racers got hit with cool whipping winds at the annual Jacksonville Marathon and Half Marathon.
The Jax Axemen won the final match of the Atlantic Cup rugby competition with a 26-18 win over the Helensburg Tigers of Australia, but it was the British Police Rugby League Team who took the overall team trophy in Saturday's rugby finale at the University of North Florida.

Riders started at Adamec Harley Davidson on Baymeadows at 11 a.m. Saturday and visited The Jax Riders Pit Stop, V-Twin Station, Whitey's Fish Camp, The Tilted Kilt, Engine 15 Brewing Co., The Steel Pony and The Bayard Rooster with the final stop at Whitey's Fish Camp in Orange Park.
Prizes were to be awarded for the best hand and worst hand.

The Baldwin Indians crossed the county to Wolfson High School on Jacksonville's southside to meet the Wolfpack in a junior varsity game. Despite a number of turnovers and fierce defense from both teams, Baldwin took the victory with a final score of 16-6. Late in the first half, Wolfson defender Robert Davis (1) battled Baldwin freshman wide receiver Ty Robinson (24) for the ball deep in Indian territory in the junior varsity game on September 8, 2011. Davis was credited with an interception.

Velobrew Cycling Hosts Brooks Rehab Cyclists

In Tuesday's final race of the Velobrew Racing Team of Jacksonville's Summer Criterium Series at the Morocco Shrine Center, members of the Brooks Rehabilitation Hand-Cycle Team and the First Coast Falcons Hand Cycle Team were hosted in their own specialty race around the center's parking lot. Winner was Tim Conner, 29, of Hilliard, a US Marine and professional motocross rider injured a year ago at the Motocross National race in Texas. Conner, a 2000 graduate of Hilliard High School, had injured his spine in a 60 foot motocross jump crash.

Hosted by the Middleburg Athletic Association at Middleburg High School, nearly 70 football teams from the American Youth Football League converged and played from sunrise to sundown in 15 minutes quarters. The SJRYFC teams playing will be Middleburg Broncos, PAL Packers, Oakleaf Knights, Villages Panthers, Mandarin Hurricanes, West Augustine Jackets, Ponte Vedra Lions and the South Menendez Junior Falcons.

Tour de Pain: Race #2-5km on Baymeadows

Race two, a 5km road race, started at 7 a.m. and gave nearly 1100 runners a respite from the oppressive afternoon heat in the second phase of the Tour De Pain. Staged by 1st Place Sports, the Tour de Pain ends Saturday afternoon with a series of Mile Sizzlers in front of the Landing before total run time for all three races will determine a winner.

Camp Boggy Creek: American Cancer Society's R.O.C.K. camp heads to Eustis

The American Cancer Society’s R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out To Cancer Kids) Camp, in partnership with Camp Boggy Creek, serves children and teenagers ages 7-16 who are referred by pediatric oncology centers and private practices and are currently being treated for cancer or who have received cancer treatment. Full time volunteer medical staff includes resident pediatric oncologists and nursing personnel. On Tuesday, campers from north Florida and Orlando gathered at the American Cancer Society offices on Prudential for a sendoff bus ride to Camp Boggy Creek for their camp which runs until August 1. There were plenty of hugs, tears, smiles and waves goodbye as two busses headed to Camp Boggy Creek near Eustis.

Fred Norman: Final Sendoff From Jax Cyclists

A handful of Jacksonville cyclists gathered Friday evening to take a police-escorted ride near Hendricks and San Marco in honor of former Jacksonville Racing Club President Fred Norman who passed away this week. Norman, a top master's rider, had been a long time cycling enthusiast. Family members joined the ride as well as team members from the Velobrew Jacksonville Racing team, Open Road, About Bicycles and the North Florida Bicycle Club. Norman's daughters; Allie and Jessie, joined the ride.

Norman, a top masters cyclist as recently as three years ago, was known for his cycling savvy and sense of humor. State Representative candidate Kim Kendall, a Republican from St. Johns County, got a seminar ride from Captain Jay Winegeart, president of the St. Johns Bar Pilot Association, Monday morning. Winegeart took Kendall and First Coast area City Councilman Gavin Rollins on one of his Bar Pilot boats from its' Mayport based facility to Jaxport near Talleyrand and spoke about economic and environmental concerns dealing with improving Jacksonville's cargo ship business. Winegeart's Bar Pilot Association supervises all incoming and outgoing cargo ships into the downtown Jacksonville economy. Kendall was informed on dredging issues, improvement of the St. John's River shipping corridor and the future of the River with regard to other area ports, such as Savannah, Ga., Charleston, SC, and Ft. Lauderdale.

The newly formed Florida Sol FC women's soccer team, featuring numerous former area players, held a Meet the Players and Intra-Squad scrimmage Tuesday night at the Clay County Soccer Club complex in Eagle Harbor. Coached by Luis Torres, the Sol plays in the Women's Premiere Soccer League Sunshine Conference mainly covering cities in Florida and features a 12 game schedule. The WPSL, established in 1998, contains nearly 50 teams nationwide. The Sol team starts a six game home stretch with games starting on Fri., June 6 at 7:30pm at the Clay County Soccer Complex. Spring Football Jamboree 2011 at Wolfson

Wolfson hosted a spring football jamboree featuring four teams from the southside and beaches areas of Jacksonville on May 26, 2011. Wolfson, Fletcher, Englewood and Sandalwood played in a rotating schedule of quarters that allowed each team to play a minimum of a half. Prior to the game, a dedication was held for the Fallen Heroes Monument to honor former Wolfson students Robert Gorske (Class of 1967), Colin Slack (Class of 1974) and Jonathan Taylor (Class of 2005). The mission of Florida Fallen Heroes is to create, establish and help maintain the Fallen Soldier Monument at each hometown high school of a Florida graduate who lost their life defending the United States of America.

Graduation 2011 - Alden Road Exceptional Student Center

The first in 24 scheduled graduation events for Duval County schools, students from the Alden Road Exceptional Student Center accepted their diplomas at the Wilson Center of Florida State College at Jacksonville South Campus on May 25, 2011. According to the Duval County Schools website, Alden Road Exceptional Student Center was built in 1975 as a school to serve students who had moderate mental handicaps. Alden Road School presently serves 230 students in grades 6 through 12. The entire student population is composed of students who are in full-time exceptional student education (ESE) program and come from all areas of the county. The vision of Alden Road School is to prepare graduates to meet the challenges of adult living as independently as possible with appropriate support.
Playing toe-to-toe and chin-to-chin, the Jacksonville Axemen rugby team lost a 34-32 battle to the visiting New Zealand Police Rugby Team Sunday afternoon at Hodges Stadium at UNF.

Episcopal's Garrett Scantling won the pole vault at 15 feet with Bishop Kenny's Stacey Drilling taking the high jump as area athletes participated in the FHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships Saturday at Showalter Field in Winter Park. Other athletes winning state titles were Bolles girls 4 x 800 relay, Lynn Cook of Andrew Jackson High in the discus, Marcus Martinez of Ponte Vedra in the boys 800 and Crompton of Ponte Vedra in the 300 hurdles. Team scores put Bolles girls at third and Episcopal's boys at third.

Class 2A Regional Track and Field Meet at Bolles High School

The April 21, 2011 regional competition for Class 2A in regions 1-4 was hosted by the Bolles School on their campus, located on the southside of Jacksonville. Schools included in the competition from Jacksonville included Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Episcopal, Jackson, Englewood, Raines and Ribault. Schools from outside the Jacksonville area included Baker, Godwin (Talllahassee), South Walton Beach, Santa Fe, Rutherford (Panama City), Florida High (Tallahassee), Yulee, Suwannee, Union County and West Nassau.
Jacksonville's Bolles girls won the team standings, and Godby (Tallahassee) had the highest team total for the boys.

Jacksonville Turkish Festival 2011

The third annual Jacksonville Turkish Festival was celebrated on April 17, 2011 at the Amity Turkish Cultural Center on Jacksonville's Southside. The festival included folk dances, food and art from the Turkish-American community in the northeast Florida region.
Amity Turkish Cultural Board member Yildirim Sivar explained while this was the first year a small admission fee was charged, the board had partnered with Wolfson Childrens Hospital to donate the proceeds of the festival.
New additions to the event this year included professors and artists from colleges and universities, both local and international, to provide education to the festival attendees on Turkish culture.
Sivar stated there were around 600 Turkish-American families living in the northeast Florida region. The expected attendance for the Jacksonville Turkish Festival was five thousand, an increase from the three thousand who attended the event the previous year.

In the final regular game of the season, the Bolles Lady Bulldogs came to the home field of the 16-8 Mandarin Mustang team on Thursday, April 14, 2011. It was a defensive battle up to the fifth inning, when the Mustangs rallied with four runs, which proved to be the only scores of the game. Mandarin senior Riley Carter pitched for the Mustangs, shutting out the Bolles team with a final score of 4-0.
